Retailers are able to enter into one of the following categories:

  
Outlets over 1,000 square metre:

Large Format This includes the total range of retail outlets e.g. mass merchandisers, department stores, furnishing stores, hardware, stores, garden centres etc.

Sponsor - Visa

Supermarkets Full supermarket concepts which contain all departments i.e. butchers, delicatessen, liquor. Supermarkets/ Superettes under 1,000 square metres should enter the Food & Beverage category.

Fashion, Footwear and Accessories Outlets that predominantly sell apparel and/or footwear and/or accessories, excluding specialist sports footwear stores.

Sponsor - NZ Retail

Lifestyle and Fitness Outlets that predominantly sell goods that enhance leisure time activities e.g. sporting goods, fitness centres, specialist footwear stores, music stores, video stores, bookstores, garden centres, pet stores, craft stores, camera stores.

Sponsor - Advantage Business

Giftware and Homeware Outlets that predominantly sell giftware and homeware i.e gift shops, jewellery, florists, souvenirs, galleries, homeware, linen, kitchenware.

Sponsor - CB Richard Ellis (CBRE)

Health & Beauty Hairdressers, beauty salons, pharmacies, health stores and similar.

Sponsor - Telecom

Specialty Stores For example; home appliances, flooring coverings, lighting, bathrooms, furniture, home furnishings and any other store which doesn’t fit into the other categories.

Food & Beverage Cafes, bottle stores, delicatessens, grocers, convenience stores.

Start Up Business Award A new shop concept and new shop brand that has commenced trading after 1 May 2007. (This category is not eligible for Overall TOP SHOP® and new stores of existing franchises or chain stores are not eligible).

Outstanding Customer Service You cannot choose to enter this category.  Stores who score well on the customer service criteria of  the Fieldforce mystery shopping visit will automatically be entered into this category (the winner of  this category is eligible for Overall TOP SHOP®).

Innovation Excellence in Retail You cannot choose to enter this category.  Awarded to a retailer that has entered a TOP SHOP® major category and has demonstrated innovation which has resulted in the achievement of excellence in retailing (not eligible for overall TOP SHOP®).

Retail Modern Apprentice of the Year Award This year the Retail Institute (formerly known as the Retail ITO) has introduced this new award. Retail Modern Apprentices are nominated by their employers. The overall winner will receive an Outward Bound learning experience.
