May 2003 Retail Results
Reasonable growth in the retail sector is being sustained by the results of the May retail figures released today by Statistics New Zealand, says John Albertson, chief executive of the New Zealand Retailers Association.
Within the past five months the level of growth compared with the same period last year has been:
- January 2003 7.8%
- February 2003 6.2%
- March 2003 5.4%
- April 2003 3.0%
- May 2003 4.2%
Particular growth was evidenced in May by department stores where sales increased by 12.2%.
Viewed regionally, May sales increases were reflected throughout the country, particularly in the South Island (excluding Canterbury) where sales increased by 6.5%.
The monthly results tabulated above reconfirm our expectation that growth of around 5% will be attained in the 2003 calendar year in the retail sector, concluded Mr Albertson
